Science & Maths Without the Traditional Classroom

Education doesn’t have to look like school.

Every young person learns differently.

For some, home education provides the flexibility and freedom they need to thrive. Others may be temporarily or permanently unable to attend mainstream school and need an alternative way to continue learning.

STEM Tutoring provides flexible Chemistry, Physics, Maths and general science support for home-educated young people and learners who are currently outside mainstream education.

Learning can be structured around formal qualifications or simply around developing knowledge, confidence and curiosity.

Home Education

Home education offers families the opportunity to build learning around their young person.

STEM Tutoring can complement your existing home-education programme by providing specialist teaching in Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Science.

This could involve:

• Regular weekly subject tuition
• National Qualification preparation
• Building core Maths and Science skills
• Topic-based learning
• Practical and real-world science activities where appropriate
• Exam preparation
• Small-group learning
• One-to-one support

There is no requirement for every learner to follow exactly the same pathway.

We can discuss what you and your young person want to achieve and build the programme around those goals.

Neurodiversity-Friendly Learning

I have extensive experience supporting neurodivergent young people and learners with additional support needs.

Sessions can be adapted to include:

• Clear and predictable lesson structures
• Visual explanations and modelling
• Reduced-pressure approaches
• Flexible pacing
• Movement or sensory breaks
• Breaking larger tasks into manageable steps
• Alternative ways of demonstrating understanding
• Using interests to support engagement
• Regular repetition and reinforcement
• A calm and supportive learning environment

Most importantly, I don't assume that a particular strategy will work simply because it has worked for somebody else.

Before starting tuition, I'll talk with you and your young person about what helps them learn — and what doesn't.

Re-engaging With Education

Sometimes attending school becomes difficult.

A young person may have experienced anxiety around education, additional support needs, disrupted attendance, difficulties within the school environment or simply reached a point where traditional education is no longer working for them.

Returning immediately to a conventional classroom approach is not always the answer.

Sessions can begin slowly, focusing on relationships, confidence and successful learning experiences before gradually increasing the level of academic challenge.

Success may initially mean completing a piece of work.

It might mean attending regularly.

It might mean rediscovering an interest in science.

Eventually, it could mean achieving a National Qualification.

The pathway will look different for every young person.

Small-Group Learning

For some young people, one-to-one tuition is ideal.

Others benefit from having a small community of learners around them.

Small-group sessions provide an opportunity to develop academic knowledge while also learning alongside other young people in a much quieter and more supportive environment than a traditional classroom.

Groups are deliberately kept small so that every learner can receive individual support.

Sessions may take place in suitable community locations such as libraries and learning spaces around Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Qualifications

Home-educated learners and young people outside mainstream education may still want to work towards formal qualifications.

Structured tuition is available for:

National 5 Chemistry
Higher Chemistry
National 5 Physics
Higher Physics
National 5 Maths
National 5 Applications of Maths

GCSE support is also available.

If you're unsure which level is appropriate, we can discuss the young person's previous learning and current goals before deciding on a pathway.

You don't need to know exactly what programme your young person needs before contacting me.

Tell me a little about them, what they're currently doing and what you're hoping to achieve.

We can take it from there.
